This document is the TOPS-10 PSI User's Guide (AA-CKB1A-TB), published in February 1985 by Digital Equipment Corporation.
It is a manual primarily for programmers (FORTRAN-10 and MACRO-10), describing how to:
- Write programs that transfer data over a Public Packet Switching Network (PPSN) using TOPS-10 X.25 software (TOPS-10 PSI Gateway Access Routines and TOPS-10 PSI Gateway Software).
- Gain access to a TOPS-10 host through a PPSN using TOPS-10 X.29 software (X29SRV).
The manual is divided into three parts:
- Part I: Introduction to Packet Switching, covering concepts like Virtual Circuits (Permanent and Switched), X.25, X.3, X.28, X.29 recommendations, DTE/DCE interfaces, flow control, and additional PPSN facilities.
- Part II: X.25 Reference Guide, detailing the TOPS-10 X.25 software components, functions of the PSI Gateway Access Routines, port states, and guides to using FORTRAN-10 and MACRO-10 subroutine calls for data transfer and virtual circuit management.
- Part III: X.29 Reference Guide, explaining the TOPS-10 X.29 software (X29SRV) for connecting terminals to TOPS-10 hosts via a PPSN, including sample dialogues and commands (CONNECT, CLEAR, DEFINE, DISCONNECT, INFORMATION).
It also includes appendices with sample FORTRAN-10 and MACRO-10 programs, a bibliography of CCITT recommendations, X29SRV error messages, and a glossary. The reader is expected to be an experienced FORTRAN-10 or MACRO-10 programmer familiar with PPSN user documentation and CCITT X.3, X.25, and X.29 recommendations.
