VSI-AXPVMS-SAMBA-V0410-16A-1-RELNOTES.PDF

Order Number: XX-464A4-1D

This document is the Release Notes for Samba 4.10-16A for OpenVMS (I64 and Alpha servers), based on Samba 4.10.16. It represents a significant update from previous OpenVMS Samba v4.6-5 versions, supported by VMS Software Inc. (VSI).

Key New and Changed Features:

  • WINBIND Requirement: The WINBIND process is now required for domain member servers to authenticate domain users. Users upgrading must ensure the WINBINDD_DONT_ENV logical name is removed or commented out.
  • OpenLDAP Integration: New Samba builds statically link updated OpenLDAP client libraries, eliminating the need for a separate OpenLDAP installation.

System Requirements:

  • OpenVMS Version 8.4-1H1 or higher
  • VSI, HPE, or MultiNet TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS
  • ODS-5-enabled file system (cannot be installed on ODS-2)
  • OpenVMS internationalization data kit (VMSI18N) for international characters.

Installation & Configuration Highlights:

  • Requires increasing SYSGEN parameters PROCSECTCNT (to 512) and CHANNELCNT (to 2560).
  • Recommends backing up existing CIFS configurations before installing.
  • Old CIFS for OpenVMS and new Samba are not supported in the same cluster.
  • Installation is via a compressed PCSI kit using PRODUCT INSTALL SAMBA, with /DESTINATION qualifier for non-default paths or upgrades.
  • Creates five specific OpenVMS accounts.
  • Post-installation steps include verifying SAMBA$ROOT, defining Samba utilities, and configuring the server role (standalone or domain member) using SAMBA$CONFIG.
  • Character sets default to UTF-8 but can be configured to ISO8859-1.
  • WINBIND configuration for dynamic OpenVMS account creation involves specifying a UIC number range.
  • SAMBA$CONFIG.COM facilitates migration from existing CIFS for OpenVMS configurations, including backups and rollback options.
  • SMBCLIENT now supports OpenVMS directory syntax if vms path allow = yes is added to SMB.CONF.
  • For TCPware TCP/IP users, interfaces must be manually configured in SMB.CONF as auto-detection is not supported.

Missing Functionality:

  • This release does not support classic Primary Domain Controller (PDC), Backup Domain Controller (BDC), or Active Directory Domain Controller roles.
  • Source code is not included but can be requested.

Known Issues:

  • A file and a directory with the same name are displayed as two directories.
  • WINBIND may crash on Alpha hosts if the PQL_DPGFLQUO SYSGEN parameter is less than 256000.
  • Kerberos authentication with SMBCLIENT requires specific privilege adjustments and net ads kerberos kinit.
  • New objects created by local Samba accounts might have incorrect OpenVMS ownership (workaround inherit owner = yes).
  • net rpc user rename is unsupported.
  • No support for Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 7 clients.
  • SMBCLIENT "more" command requires the GNV for OpenVMS kit.

Fixed Issues: Numerous issues have been resolved, including NT_STATUS_NO_MEMORY errors, SMBD process crashes, PID file cleanup on termination, non-admin users unable to change passwords, LDAP signing support for net and wbinfo commands, WINBIND hung states, mapping shares with rooted logical names in paths, SMBCLIENT command behavior, printing problems, MSG_LOCK directory cleanup, log file descriptor exhaustion, SAMBA$SHUTDOWN warnings, and the removal of the map untrusted to domain parameter.
