This document is a "Read Me" for Q-VET, a diagnostic and verification tool designed for Alpha Systems running OpenVMS (V7.3-2, V8.x) and Tru64 UNIX (V8.60). It is exclusively for authorized Hewlett-Packard Service Personnel and Service Partners and is found on the Alpha Systems Firmware Update CD.
Key information and instructions:
- Purpose: Q-VET is used to verify new system installations before configuring the system into a cluster or connecting to any customer data storage.
- Critical Warning (Data Loss Risk): Q-VET must be de-installed upon completion of system verification. Misuse, particularly with non-IVP (Installation Verification Program) scripts, can lead to data loss or reformatting of hard drives. IVP scripts are read-only for hard drives, but non-IVP scripts, intended for engineering/manufacturing, are write-enabled. Floppy and tape drives are always write-tested and require scratch media.
- OS Upgrades: Q-VET must be uninstalled and the system rebooted prior to any operating system upgrade, and then reinstalled after the upgrade.
- System Requirements: Adequate swap space (Tru64 UNIX) or pagefile space (OpenVMS) is crucial, with detailed calculations provided. OpenVMS also requires specific BYTLM and PGFLQUO settings for the SYSTEM account.
- Installation: Installation procedures differ for Tru64 UNIX (requires
root account) and OpenVMS (requires SYSTEM account). It involves extracting the kit, running a tuning utility (qvet_tune or @sys$update:vmsinstal), and a mandatory system reboot.
- Running Q-VET: The document details steps for running the "Long IVP Script" via both graphical and command-line interfaces on both operating systems. The full test typically takes 2-12 hours.
- Reviewing Results: A successful run indicates "Q-Vet Tests Complete: Passed" in the Summary Log. Otherwise, the System Event Analyzer (WEBES) should be used to review test results.
- De-installation: Mandatory after use, including a system reboot, to restore original system tuning and prevent misuse. Log files are retained for troubleshooting.
