This document provides installation and release notes for version 4.0 (March 2002) of the Compaq AlphaServer GS80/160/320 System Management Console (SMC).

Key updates and new features in V4.0 include:

• Multiple AlphaServer Management: A single SMC can now manage multiple AlphaServer GS80/160/320 systems, although each additional AlphaServer requires a separate ConsoleWorks license.

• New Utilities:

  • Console Group Validator (CGValidator): A utility to identify groups of console lines attached to the SMC and determine which can be partitioned by the Compaq AlphaServer Partition Manager (CAPM). It's used when adding/moving systems or upgrading.
  • Expunge

• ConsoleWorks Telnet Listener: A new method for connecting to a system's command-line interface, in addition to the existing CWTerm utility.

• Updates to ConsoleWorks software and Compaq AlphaServer Partition Manager (CAPM).

Important Installation Notes:

• Prerequisites: Installation of V4.0 is incremental and requires previous versions to be installed sequentially: V3.0 must be installed before V3.1, V3.1 before V3.2, and V3.2 before V4.0.
• Interruption: If the installation process is interrupted for any reason (e.g., power loss, accidental cancellation), the entire installation must be restarted from V3.0.
• The installation takes approximately 10 minutes.

Other Considerations:

• Compaq support for the SMC PC is maintained only with the provided hardware and software configuration; adding or replacing unauthorized components is not supported.
• Specific rules apply for setting up shared memory for OpenVMS GALAXY partitions (multiples of 64MB or 8MB depending on QBB targeting).
