This document provides installation and release notes for the AlphaServer GS80/160/320 System Management Console (SMC) V4.0B upgrade kit, which facilitates the transition from Windows NT to Windows 2000 for existing SMC units.
Key Updates and Features (V4.0B):
- Minor GUI changes.
- SMC Utilities (CGValidator, Expunge, Backup/Restore, CAPM restart) have been moved from the SMC web page to a desktop folder.
- The Backup and Restore utilities are updated to preserve ConsoleWorks log files, actions, and events.
- For P500/P650 units, the SMC application Launch Web page is no longer supported; desktop icons are provided, and Netscape is set as the default browser.
Critical Warnings and Prerequisites:
- DATA LOSS WARNING: The upgrade process will overwrite the SMC PC's disk (C: and D: drives), destroying all current contents (accounts, network setup, logs, partition maps, and other data). A mandatory backup to external media using the provided updated backup utility is required before starting the installation.
- For P500/P650 units, the Windows 2000 Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label from the kit must be attached to the PC chassis.
- Only use the CD pair specifically designated for your SMC model from the kit contents.
- Hewlett-Packard only supports the original hardware/software configuration; do not add or replace components unless allowed by HP.
Installation Process Highlights:
- Backup Data: Use the updated backup utility (found on CD1) to save all necessary data to external media.
- Initiate Install: Boot the PC with CD1 to start the imaging process.
- Windows 2000 Setup: After imaging, the system reboots for Windows 2000 initialization, requiring the 25-character product ID from the kit.
- Restore Data: Once Windows 2000 and SMC V4.0B are installed, copy the backed-up data back to D:\SMCbackup and use the ConfigRestore Utility (from the desktop SMC Utilities folder) to restore SMC content.
Important Notes:
- SMC V4.0 supports multiple AlphaServer systems, but each additional AlphaServer requires a separate ConsoleWorks license.
- Specific rules apply for shared memory allocation when setting up OpenVMS GALAXY partitions.
- If power is lost during installation, the entire process must be restarted.
- Full documentation (Installation Guide, User's Guide, and other release notes) is available in PDF format within a "Documentation" folder on the SMC desktop and on the HP website.
