DEC-10-HRPC-D RP10-C Disk Pack Synchronizer Maint Oct73

Order Number: XX-CEB85-3E

This document is Volume 1 of the Maintenance Manual for the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) RP10-C Disk Pack Synchronizer.

The RP10-C is an interface (synchronizer/adapter) designed to connect the DECsystem-10 computer (via its DF10 Data Channel) with up to eight RP02 or RP03 Disk Pack Drives. Its primary purpose is to control and synchronize data transfers, converting serial data from the disk drives to parallel data for the DF10 Data Channel, and vice-versa. It also manages disk operations such as head positioning and addressing specific cylinders, surfaces, and sectors on the removable disk packs, providing between 5.1 and 10.2 million 36-bit words of on-line auxiliary storage.

The manual provides comprehensive information for users and technicians, including:

  • Introduction: Overview of the disk pack system components, their interrelationships, RP10-C functional description, disk drive characteristics, and disk data sector format.
  • Installation: Procedures, power requirements, cable connections, and initial turn-on/checkout.
  • Operation: Description of controls and indicators, operating procedures for loading/unloading disk packs, and programming instructions (command words for read, write, seek, restore, etc.).
  • Theory of Operation: Detailed technical explanation of the RP10-C's internal mechanisms, recording techniques, addressing methods, register organization, control circuits, data flow, and comparators.
  • Maintenance: Preventive maintenance schedules and procedures (mechanical/electrical checks, diagnostic testing), corrective maintenance (troubleshooting guides for common errors, adjustment procedures, such as for the Read Data Separator, and cleaning instructions).
  • References to engineering drawings (found in Volume 2) and a glossary of terms.
