AMS for SMC Users

This document introduces the AlphaServer Management Station (AMS) as an enhanced management solution for users familiar with the Server Management Console (SMC).

1. Server Management Console (SMC): A Windows/Intel-based, web-enabled application limited to managing AlphaServer GS80/160/320 servers. It includes ConsoleWorks for console management and Compaq AlphaServer Partition Management (CAPM) for partitioning.

2. AlphaServer Management Station (AMS): A more comprehensive software application that runs on Alpha Tru64 UNIX or Linux/Intel platforms. It manages a broader range of AlphaServers, including ES47/ES80/GS1280 and GS80/GS160/GS320, and provides console management for other serial devices. AMS allows monitoring environmental status, logs, connecting to management ports, booting/managing OS, and partitioning platforms. It can be accessed locally or remotely via a web browser or Telnet and provides secure access.

3. Key Integrations & Migrations:

   • ConsoleWorks: While AMS has its own console manager, it is compatible with ConsoleWorks to facilitate migration for SMC users. ConsoleWorks can access AMS-managed consoles through an external port.
   • Partition Management: AMS includes the AlphaServer Partition Wizard (APW), which is functionally similar to SMC's CAPM but supports a wider range of AlphaServer platforms (including ES80/GS1280) and can use CAPM-created map files.

In summary, AMS offers greater functionality and broader platform/device support compared to SMC, including enhanced user authorization (per user class) and console grouping (class-defined), making it a more versatile management tool for AlphaServer environments.
