This document is the Installation Guide and Release Notes for HP Distributed NetBeans for OpenVMS, Version 6.5.2, released in September 2010.

Core Components & Concept: Distributed NetBeans comprises two parts:

  1. Distributed NetBeans Client for OpenVMS: A plug-in for NetBeans 6.5 running on a desktop system.
  2. IDE Server for OpenVMS: Runs on an OpenVMS system, providing remote services to the client. Communication between the client and server is encrypted using SSL.

New Features in Version 6.5.2:

  • Web Service Integration Toolkit (WSIT) Support for OpenVMS: Allows wrapping a file into a 3GL application.
  • JAVA 6 Support for Integrity servers: Version 6.5.2 supports Java 6 on OpenVMS Integrity servers.
  • The version has been renumbered, supporting NetBeans 6.5 only, and NetBeans 6.5.1 support is discontinued.

Prerequisites:

  • Client (Desktop): NetBeans IDE 6.5, Java Standard Edition v1.5.0_17 or higher (JSE v1.6-04 from sun.com/downloads is NOT supported), optional X Windows Server.
  • IDE Server (OpenVMS Alpha/Integrity): OpenVMS Version 8.2 or higher, Software Development Kit (SDK) v1.4.2-7 or higher for Java, required ECOs for SDK and 3GL Debug, HP TCP/IP Services (V5.4 ECO 4+ for Alpha, V5.5+ for Integrity) with FTP service enabled, optional compilers.
  • Hardware (IDE Server): 500MHz+ processor, 256MB memory, 2000 blocks free disk space, ODS-5 or ODS-2 disk (ODS-5 for Java SDK).

Installation Process:

  • Downloading: Obtain the IDE Server Kit (PCSI_xxxEXE) for OpenVMS and the Distributed NetBeans Client Module (.nbm) for the desktop.
  • Client Installation: Requires NetBeans 6.5 to be installed first. The .nbm file must have a lowercase "nbm" extension. Install via the NetBeans plug-in wizard and restart the IDE.
  • IDE Server Installation: Use PRODUCT INSTALL IDESERVER command from a privileged OpenVMS account. It installs into SYS$COMMON by default, but a different destination can be specified. Requires accepting an Apache License.

After Installation Configuration:

  • Startup/Shutdown: Add SYS$STARTUP:IDE$STARTUP.COM to SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM and SYS$STARTUP:IDE$SHUTDOWN.COM to SYS$MANAGER:SYSHUTDWN.COM. The startup procedure must be executed from the SYSTEM account.
  • System Parameters: CHANNELCNT must be >= 2000.
  • Account Quotas: User accounts (IDE$USER) need specific quotas (e.g., WSEXTENT >= 30000, JTQUOTA >= 60000, PGFLQUO >= 500000). If disk quotas are enabled, IDE$SERVER requires 200,000 blocks and each IDE$USER account needs 100,000 blocks.
  • Logical Names: Various logical names can control the IDE Server, e.g., IDE$JDK_VERSION to force a specific Java SDK version, IDE$HOST_IPNAME for multi-Ethernet systems, IDE$RMI_PORT for the RMI port, and IDE$ALLOW_EXTAUTH to ignore the ExtAuth flag for local authentication.
  • Keystore Configuration: SSL uses a keystore/truststore with a default password _keystore.

Release Notes & Known Problems:

  • Supported SMB Products: Advanced Server and HP OpenVMS Common Internet File System (CIFS) V1.0 (Samba V3.0.24).
  • C/C++ Development Pack Interaction: If installed, it takes precedence, disabling some remote C/C++/Fortran/Bash actions.
  • Compatibility: Java Source Version on desktop and IDE Server must be compatible.
  • Path Limitations: OpenVMS directory and filenames containing spaces are not supported.
  • Detached Processes: IDE$SERVER and IDE$USER processes are detached, potentially affecting symbol/logical name definitions in SYLOGIN.COM/LOGIN.COM.
  • Known Problems: Debugging Java 6 is not supported; issues with remote project creation (e.g., cannot use directory with NBPROJECT folder or SYS$LOGIN as root); NAT router timeouts (requires java.rmi.server.hostname property workaround); NetBeans IDE should be disconnected from the server before closing; specific issues with Ant's <delete> tag and FTP performance on Windows.
  • Problems Corrected: WSIT template creation, default FTP mode, debugging warning messages, automatic removal of debug files, adding source directories, COBOL/FORTRAN indentation issues.

Software Support:

  • HP provides support via OpenVMS Alpha/Integrity service agreements.
  • Downloads are a courtesy; official distribution is via media kits.
  • General NetBeans support is available through the NetBeans user group and an OpenVMS newsgroup. HP engineering can be contacted via email.
