This document is the Installation Guide for NetBeans™ Version 3.6 on OpenVMS Alpha, published in June 2004, and is primarily intended for system administrators.
Key Information:
- Purpose: Provides instructions for installing NetBeans 3.6 on the OpenVMS Alpha operating system.
System Requirements:
- Operating System: OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.3-1 or higher.
- Software: Java™ Platform Software Development Kit (SDK) v 1.4.2 or higher for OpenVMS Alpha. If a different Java version or non-default location is used,
NETBEANS$JDK_HOME must be defined.
- Hardware: Minimum 500MHz Alpha processor, 128MB RAM (256MB recommended for best performance per user), and 75,000 blocks of free disk space.
- Disk Format: NetBeans must be installed on an ODS-5 disk; both the installation directory and the user directory require ODS-5.
- X Window System: Optimal performance is achieved on a local workstation, with specific Excursion font sets (Speedo, Type 1, Misc, 100dpi, 75dpi) installed.
Installation Prerequisites:
- Privileges: Requires specific authorized and enabled privileges (e.g., BYPASS, CMKRNL, SYSPRV).
- Disk Space: 175,000 blocks needed during installation, 161,000 after.
- Quotas & SYSGEN Values: Specific minimum process quotas and system generation parameters must be met.
- Backup: A system disk backup is recommended before installation.
Installation Process:
- Utilizes the PCSI installation utility.
- The main command is
PRODUCT INSTALL NETBEANS36, with an optional /DESTINATION qualifier to specify an ODS-5 disk and directory.
- The installer checks for prerequisites and requires acceptance of license agreements.
- Post-installation tasks include defining a system-wide symbol in
SYS$MANAGER:SYLOGIN.COM to easily start NetBeans and potentially setting NETBEANS$JDK_HOME.
- Plug-in modules can be installed via the NetBeans Update Center, which also offers OpenVMS-specific modules.
Support: Support is provided through standard OpenVMS service agreements, peer-support channels on NetBeans.org (mailing lists, newsgroups), direct email to NetBeans@hp.com, and a bug-entering system (IssueZilla).
