TM03 Magnetic Tape Formatter User Guide

Order Number: EK-0TM03-UG

This document is the User Guide for the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) TM03 Magnetic Tape Formatter, with editions dating from 1977 to 1979.

The TM03 serves as a crucial interface between DEC Massbus controllers and various 1/2-inch magnetic tape transports (slaves). Its primary function is to format data from PDP-10, PDP-11, and PDP-15 processors into tape frame characters for writing, and to perform the reverse during read operations. It supports both 800 bits/inch NRZI and 1600 bits/inch Phase Encoded (PE) densities, as well as multiple tape speeds (45, 75, or 125 inches/second).

Key features of the TM03 include:

  • Automatic single-track error correction for PE data (hardware) and NRZI data (software).
  • Automatic density selection for read operations from the beginning of tape (BOT).
  • The ability to control up to eight slave tape transports per formatter (allowing a Massbus controller to manage up to 64 transports).
  • Writing industry-compatible PE tape marks.
  • Extensive parity checking and self-contained maintenance modes for diagnostics.

The guide provides a comprehensive overview, detailing the formatter's functional description (including its various internal modules), in-depth programming information covering its ten registers (e.g., Control, Status, Error, Frame Count), data formatting for different processor types, and a full list of command functions (e.g., No-Op, Rewind, Erase, Read/Write, Space operations). It also includes practical installation procedures, focusing on cabling configurations, and unit specifications for power, environment, and reliability.
