HP TCPIP Services for OpenVMS Release Notes

Order Number: XX-44EBB-22

This document, "HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Release Notes, June 2006," details the new features, installation requirements, restrictions, and bug fixes for Version 5.6 of HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS. It supports OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS Industry Standard 64 (I64) systems (v8.2 and v8.3).

Key updates and enhancements in Version 5.6 include:

  • Core Network Services:

    • BIND: Upgrades to BIND 9 Resolver (with IPv6 support) and BIND 9.3.1 Server for improved security and stability.
    • NTP: New cryptographic security features (Autokeys) and fixes for clock adjustment and ODS-5 filename issues.
    • SMTP: Support for multiple domain names in a zone for local delivery, and corrections for recipient deliverability, blocked senders, Message-ID uniqueness, and header line length.
  • File and Remote Access Services:

    • NFS: Client support over TCP, server support for OpenVMS I64 platforms, and symbolic link support.
    • SSH: Upgraded with Kerberos authentication support (introducing gssapi-with-mic, kerberos-2@ssh.com, and kerberos-tgt-2@ssh.com methods), and various fixes for password change, X11 forwarding, SFTP issues, and batch mode.
    • TELNET: Upgraded with Kerberos support, and the server device limit has been removed.
    • FTP: Performance enhancements for VMS Plus Mode and fixes for IP address specification and interim file deletion.
    • RCP: Now supports recursive file copies up to 255 directory levels, preserves OpenVMS file attributes during OpenVMS-to-OpenVMS copies (with /VMS), and can copy files larger than 2GB (up to 4GB).
  • IPv6 Expansion:

    • LPD and TELNETSYM printing software now support IPv6 transport.
    • Improvements to TCPIP$CONFIG for failSAFE IP and TCPIP$IP6_SETUP.COM for IPv6 configuration.
  • System and Management:

    • Integration of critical bug fixes from Tru64 BL26 updates.
    • Improved interface configuration in TCPIP$CONFIG.

Important Installation & Configuration Notes:

  • Requires removal of V5.3 Early Adopter's Kits (SSH and failSAFE IP) before installation.
  • Upgrading directly from TCP/IP Services Version 4.x is not qualified for this release, and V5.5 was the last version to support this path.
  • Specific guidance is provided for adding systems to an OpenVMS cluster and updating SSH configuration files, as older versions are incompatible.

Key Restrictions & Limitations:

  • The netstat -z option is no longer implemented.
  • The SNMP master agent may fail to start if IPv6 is not enabled.
  • SLIP (Serial Line IP) is not supported.
  • Specific restrictions apply to OpenVMS I64 platforms, advanced programming environment APIs, BIND/DNS (e.g., Mobile IPv6 is not supported, BIND resolver is required for IPv6), NFS, NTP, SNMP, SSH, and TCPDUMP. Many SSH features, especially those ported from UNIX, have specific behavioral differences or are unsupported.

The document also lists numerous specific bug corrections across all major components, enhancing stability and functionality. Appendices provide detailed procedural steps for implementing NTP Autokeys and configuring SSH Kerberos authentication.
