M-1129 RIMpunch Oct61

Order Number: XX-64B81-11

This document, a Permanent Memorandum (M-1129) from Digital Equipment Corporation dated October 2, 1961, describes the "Octal Dump & Read-In-Mode Punch" program for the PDP computer.

The program's primary function is to extract information from any specified section of core memory. It offers two output modes:

  1. Octal Type-Out: Information is typed onto the console typewriter.
  2. RIM Punch Tape: Information is punched onto a Read-In-Mode tape.

Control over the program's operation is achieved through the console typewriter and Sense Switch #1. Setting Sense Switch #1 "Up" selects RIM tape punching, while setting it "Down" selects octal type-out.

Users provide control information by typing in commands:

  • A starting address followed by 'b'.
  • A final address followed by 'f'. Typing 'f' initiates the data transfer (either punch or type-out, depending on Sense Switch #1).
  • An optional address followed by 'j' for a jump statement to be punched at the end of a RIM tape.
  • Typing 'r' specifically triggers a RIM tape punch.

The document also includes the program's assembly code listing.
