This document is the "HP OpenVMS Version 8.2 Upgrade and Installation Manual" for both Alpha and I64 systems, published in January 2005. It supersedes Version 7.3-2.
The manual provides comprehensive instructions for installing, upgrading, and performing related operations (like startup, shutdown, and backup) of the HP OpenVMS operating system. It covers:
- Getting Started: Defines key terms and outlines preliminary steps, including hardware and software component checks, and using the operating system's menu system.
- Installation: Details the process of installing OpenVMS Alpha and I64 operating systems, including booting the system kit, creating the system disk (with options like INITIALIZE or PRESERVE), specifying system parameters (volume label, on-disk structure, hard links), setting up system accounts and passwords, and configuring cluster membership, DECnet, and time zones.
- Post-Installation/Upgrade Tasks: Covers essential steps after installation or upgrade, such as backing up the system disk, registering licenses, configuring volume shadowing, tuning BAP system parameters, customizing the system (e.g., network proxy files, queue manager, multihead systems, networking software), initializing optional components (CDSA, Availability Manager, Kerberos, Performance Data Collector, Management Station, Debugger Clients), creating login messages, examining command procedures, managing system files and libraries, installing patches, creating print queues and user accounts, and running system tests.
- Pre-Upgrade Tasks: Outlines necessary steps before upgrading OpenVMS Alpha (note: direct upgrade for I64 is not supported in this version), including reviewing documentation, checking software versions, preparing the system disk (e.g., for shadowing, disk size, authorization files, system parameters, FEEDBACK.DAT file), backing up the disk, and shutting down.
- Cluster Upgrades: Provides specific guidance for preparing and performing upgrades in an OpenVMS Cluster environment, distinguishing between concurrent and rolling upgrades, and addressing mixed-version/mixed-architecture support.
- Boot and Shutdown Procedures: Includes detailed instructions for halting, booting (various methods like local drive, InfoServer, conversational, emergency), and shutting down OpenVMS Alpha and HP Integrity Server (I64) systems, along with troubleshooting.
- System Disk Backup and Restore: Describes reasons for backup, suggested procedures, and caution for OpenVMS Clusters, as well as alternative backup/restore methods in a minimum OpenVMS environment.
- Internationalization Data Kit: Explains how to install the OpenVMS Internationalization Data Kit (VMSI18N).
- OpenVMS Management Station: Guides on preparing the OpenVMS system and PC to use the management station client and server software.
- System Disk Initialization and Removal: Covers alternative ways to initialize the system disk (including managing diagnostic partitions on I64) and how to remove the OpenVMS operating system.
The manual also contains a glossary of key terms and an index.
