HP Availability Manager User's Guide 2.4-1

Order Number: AA-RNSJD-TE

The HP Availability Manager (Version 2.4-1, January 2005) is a system management tool designed to detect and correct system availability problems on OpenVMS nodes.

It operates with a Data Analyzer (running on Windows 2000 SP4+, Windows XP SP1, OpenVMS Alpha 7.2-1+, or OpenVMS I64 8.2+) and Data Collector (running on OpenVMS Alpha and VAX 6.2+, OpenVMS I64 8.2+) components. The Data Analyzer monitors one or more OpenVMS nodes on an extended LAN, collecting and analyzing system and process data via a proprietary IEEE 802.3 Extended Packet format protocol, which allows it to function even if standard network protocols are unavailable.

Key features include immediate notification of performance and accessibility problems, centralized management, an intuitive Java-based graphical user interface (GUI), and real-time intervention capabilities to adjust node and process parameters, even on hung remote nodes.

Problems are identified through configurable events, which are triggered when data values meet or exceed user-defined thresholds for a specified number of consecutive data collections (occurrences). The software allows for customization of data collection, event filtering, and security settings.

Security is maintained through passwords (the Data Analyzer's password must match the Data Collector's security triplet), private LAN transport, and OpenVMS file protection and process privileges, allowing for granular read/write/control access.

The guide is intended for system managers familiar with Windows, assisting them in understanding, configuring, and using the software, including displaying node and cluster data, interpreting events, and performing various "fixes" (node, process, and cluster interconnect).
