OpenVMS Utility Routines Manual

Order Number: AA-PVBEE-TK

This document, the "OpenVMS Utility Routines Manual" (April 2001, Order Number AA–PV6EE–TK), describes a comprehensive set of programming interfaces for various OpenVMS utilities. It is intended for programmers who wish to integrate or invoke OpenVMS utility functions within their applications.

The manual is structured with an introduction, followed by detailed chapters for each utility routine set. Each chapter includes an introduction to the specific set of routines, programming examples to illustrate their use, and detailed descriptions of individual routines.

The utility routine sets covered include:

  • Access Control List (ACL) Editor Routine
  • Backup (BACKUP) Routine
  • Command Language Interface (CLI) Routines
  • Common File Qualifier Routines
  • Convert (CONVERT) Routines
  • Data Compression/Expansion (DCX) Routines (noted as a programming-interface-only facility)
  • DEC Text Processing Utility (DECTPU) Routines
  • EDT Routines
  • File Definition Language (FDL) Routines
  • Librarian (LBR) Routines
  • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) Routines (noted as a C language interface)
  • LOGINOUT (LGI) Routines
  • Mail Utility (MAIL) Routines
  • National Character Set (NCS) Utility Routines
  • Print Symbiont Modification (PSM) Routines (a programming-interface-only facility)
  • Symbiont/Job Controller Interface (SMB) Routines (a programming-interface-only facility)
  • Sort/Merge (SOR) Routines

Some of these utility routines have equivalents at the Digital Command Language (DCL) level, allowing tasks to be performed either programmatically or via DCL commands. The manual emphasizes that all utility routines conform to the OpenVMS Calling Standard. This specific version supersedes the manual for OpenVMS Version 7.2 and applies to OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.3 and OpenVMS VAX Version 7.3.
