This document is the Maintenance Manual for the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PC02 Perforated Tape Reader.

The PC02 is a high-speed photoelectric reader designed to process 8-level, 1-inch-wide perforated tape at a rate of 300 characters per second under external control (or 25 char/sec in start-stop mode).

Key components and operation include:

  • A 9-channel photoelectric read head with 8 photodiodes for data and 1 for the feed hole, illuminated by a light source.
  • An electromechanical tape-feed system driven by an HS50 SLO-SYN Precision Stepping Motor, controlled by solenoid drivers, which moves the tape past the read station.
  • FLIP CHIP circuit modules containing the necessary drivers and photocell amplifiers. When a hole is sensed, photocells output -3V; with no hole, they output 0V.
  • The unit interfaces with external controllers via a W023 connector.

The manual provides comprehensive maintenance procedures, including:

  • Preventive Maintenance: Scheduled inspections, cleaning, and lubrication (recommended every 600 hours or 4 months).
  • Corrective Maintenance: Troubleshooting guidelines using system logs, visual inspection, diagnostic programs, and oscilloscope signal tracing. It details testing solenoid drivers and photocell amplifier modules, with repair primarily limited to semiconductor replacement.
  • Adjustment Procedures: Instructions for tape path alignment, sprocket-wheel alignment (if components are removed), and photodiode amplifier adjustments to ensure accurate data reading.

Additionally, it covers installation considerations such as rack mounting (19-inch or 19.5-inch wide), environmental requirements (60-95°F operating temperature), and power supply needs (-15V dc, +10V dc, -30V dc).
