DEC OSF/1 Technical Overview

Order Number: AA-Q0R1B-TE

This document provides a technical overview of DEC OSF/1 Version 3.0, a multiuser/multitasking 64-bit operating system developed by Digital Equipment Corporation. It combines Carnegie Mellon University's Mach 2.5 kernel design with components from Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) 4.3/4.4, UNIX System Laboratories System V Release 4.0, and numerous Digital-specific enhancements. The system supports a full implementation of the X Window System (X11R5) and Motif 1.2.3, while also maintaining backward compatibility with Motif 1.1.3.

Key features and enhancements include:

  • Performance: Significant improvements in Virtual Memory (with a rewritten subsystem including Unified Buffer Cache, eager swap, round-robin swapping, page clustering), file systems (UFS block clustering, cached NFS writes), and optimized TCP/IP (with IP Multicasting).
  • Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP): Fully parallelized kernel and operating system designed for high concurrency on multi-CPU systems, supporting processor affinity and load balancing.
  • File Systems: Supports a wide array of file systems (UFS, NFSv3, CDFS, AdvFS, MFS, /proc, FFM, FDFS), advanced Logical Volume Management (LVM) and Logical Storage Management (LSM) for data protection and performance, and the Prestoserve file system accelerator for synchronous disk writes.
  • Networking: A comprehensive Internet Protocol Suite, support for Ethernet, FDDI, and Token Ring networks, and various Application Programming Interfaces (XTI/TLI, BSD Sockets, STREAMS, DLI, DLPI). It also includes a suite of network administration tools, naming services (BIND, NIS), and time services (NTP, TSP).
  • Development Environment: Offers a fully ANSI C compliant environment with a 64-bit C compiler, advanced debuggers (dbx, DECladebug), dynamic shared libraries with versioning and quickstart capabilities, DECthreads for multithreaded applications, memory-mapped file support, and a POSIX 1003.1b-compliant realtime programming environment.
  • Windowing Environment: Provides robust X Window System support with numerous X server extensions (e.g., Access-X, DPS, XIE) and Digital's own extended Motif widgets and X clients.
  • System V Functionality: Ensures high compatibility with System V Release 4 through a compatibility habitat and an optional System V Environment, conforming to SVID 3.
  • Internationalization: A fully internationalized operating system supporting numerous languages and locales, X Input Method (XIM) for Asian languages, and codeset conversion utilities.
  • Security: Designed to meet or exceed C2 evaluation class requirements (DoD 5200.28-STD TCSEC), with robust auditing, identification and authentication, object reuse, discretionary access controls, system integrity checks, and enhanced administration tools, all with minimal performance impact.
  • System Administration & Installation: Simplifies tasks with flexible installation options (full, update), menu-driven setup scripts for configuring various system components, dynamic system configuration, and dataless management services.

The document also details maximum system limits for various components and describes DEC OSF/1 Version 3.0's conformance to Internet Host Requirements (RFC 1122 and RFC 1123).
