This document, "Compaq TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Release Notes, April 2002," summarizes the new features, changes, problems, restrictions, and corrections for Compaq TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Version 5.3. This version is a direct upgrade from Version 5.1 and is supported on OpenVMS Alpha Versions 7.2-2, 7.3, and OpenVMS VAX Versions 7.2, 7.3.
Key New Features and Changes:
- New Kernel Code Base: Enhances IPv6 support with features like IPv6 tunneling (RFC 2473), 6-to-4 tunneling (no relay router), Anycast addressing, and an updated application programming interface (API) that requires recompilation of existing IPv6 applications due to
sockaddr structure changes.
- NTP Version 4: Integrates NTP V4, offering improved accuracy, 64-bit floating-double calculations, redesigned clock discipline, and new association modes (multicast, manycast) for automatic server/client discovery.
- BIND Version 9: Implements ISC BIND Version 9, bringing advanced DNS security (DNSSEC, TSIG, TKEY, SIG(0)), comprehensive IPv6 support for DNS queries, and enhanced DNS protocol features.
- IMAP Server: Introduces an IMAP server for OpenVMS Mail (Alpha systems only), enabling client applications like Microsoft Outlook to manage mailboxes. Requires specific OpenVMS patches for older Alpha versions.
- Kerberos Enhancements for TELNET: Adds Kerberos authentication support to the TELNET client and server, based on MIT Kerberos Version 5. Encryption is not supported in this release.
- LPD Server Cluster Support: Features for improved network printing in OpenVMS Clusters, including clusterwide incoming and utility print queues with load balancing, and a new configuration file (
TCPIP$LPD.CONF) replacing many logical names.
- Subsystem Attribute Management: New
sysconfig and sysconfigdb utilities for dynamic and persistent modification of subsystem attributes.
- UNIX Services Database File: Provides
TCPIP$ETC:SERVICES.DAT for associating Internet service names/aliases with port numbers and protocols.
- NFS Support for Extended File Specifications: NFS server and client now support OpenVMS Extended File Specifications (EFS) on ODS-5 disk volumes.
- FTP Server and Client UNIX Path Names (Alpha Only): FTP commands now support UNIX path names on ODS-5 volumes.
- Online Help: Additional online help for error messages.
Important Restrictions and Problems:
- BIND 9 is Alpha-only: BIND Version 9 does not run on VAX systems; future BIND 8 support on VAX is limited, recommending an upgrade to Alpha.
- IPv6 Requires BIND Resolver: The BIND resolver must be enabled for IPv6 functionality.
- IPv6 6to4 Restriction: Address selection rules are not fully implemented, so operating a host in a mixed 6to4 and native IPv6 site is not recommended. Only one 6to4 border router per site.
- LPD Migration: Manual steps are required to migrate existing LPD configurations to cluster-wide setups when upgrading.
- UCX$CLEANUP.COM Warning: On VAX systems, running
UCX$CLEANUP.COM after installing TCP/IP Services V5.3 will corrupt the installation and must be avoided.
- SNMP Compatibility: The underlying eSNMP API changed; executable images linked against older libraries might need relinking.
- NFS Client Limitations: The NFS client supports only NFS Version 2 protocol, has a 32-bit file size limit, and supports only the ISO Latin-1 character set.
Resolved Issues:
Numerous software corrections were made, including fixes for management command interface problems (e.g., ROUTE command handling, SHOW HOST errors), BIND resolver issues, IPC 64-bit address support (Alpha-only), SMTP security vulnerabilities (version information disclosure), SNMP functionality (AGENTX MIB, subagent errors, message size options), and FTP directory listing recursion.
