This document is an installation guide and release notes for the HP Secure Web Browser (SWB) V1.1-12 for OpenVMS Integrity servers, released in December 2008. It is based on SeaMonkey V1.1.12.

Key information includes:

  • Prerequisites:

    • Requires OpenVMS Integrity servers Version 8.2-1 or higher, DECwindows MOTIF 1.5 ECO3 or higher, and HP TCP/IP Services 5.5 or higher.
    • Minimum 256 MB RAM (512 MB recommended) and 750,000 disk blocks for installation.
    • Account quotas (PGFLQUOTA, FILLM) and system parameters (PROCSECTCNT, WSEXTENT/WSMAX) must be adequately configured to avoid resource exhaustion, especially when using Java or complex pages. Installing the SWB images is the preferred solution to process section limits.
    • Local files used by the browser must be in Stream_LF record format.
  • Installation:

    • The software is a compressed self-extracting file (HP-I64VMS-CSWB-V0101-12-1.PCSI_SFXEXE).
    • Installation is performed using the PRODUCT INSTALL CSWB command, into a top-level directory.
    • The kit includes GTK+ for OpenVMS and the OpenVMS Porting Library.
    • An optional step is to install the Secure Web Browser images (via INSTALL.COM in SYS$COMMON:[CSWB]) to improve system resource usage and performance for multiple users, and to prevent "Process Section Full" errors. This requires significant global sections and pages.
  • Running the Browser:

    • The SWB is a full suite, including a web browser (Navigator), HTML editor (Composer), mail client (Messenger), and news client (Newsgroups).
    • It is invoked using @SYS$COMMON:[CSWB]MOZILLA.
    • Requires approximately 400 global pages and one global section to run.
  • Features and Integrations:

    • Java Plug-in support requires installing JDK 5.0-3+, copying the OJI plug-in (LIBJAVAPLUGIN_OJI.SO) to [CSWB.PLUGINS], and running the Java setup command.
    • IPv6 support is disabled by default but can be manually enabled (though it may cause stability issues).
    • Provides instructions for integrating the browser onto the CDE Desktop as an icon or control panel entry.
  • Known Problems and Restrictions:

    • Must be installed on a system device.
    • May fail to start for non-privileged users due to incorrect file protection on COMPREG.DAT (requires manual SET FILE /PROT=W:RE COMPREG.DAT fix).
    • Mail folders might not display if the FILLM quota is low.
    • Installation warnings occur when replacing SWB V1.7-13 with V1.1-12 due to PCSI's version comparison logic.
    • Gdk-ERROR **: BadAlloc indicates insufficient virtual memory for the X server; the DECW$SERVER_PAGE_FILE parameter needs to be increased.
    • Non-functional PAGE UP key on PC keyboards can be fixed by defining GTK_KEY_MAPPING_MODE to 2.
    • Issues with opening new DECterms can be due to low MAXBOBMEM.
  • Support:

    • HP provides support under OpenVMS Integrity servers FOE service agreements.
    • Official distributions are via media kits or software product update services; direct downloads are considered a courtesy.
    • There are no plans for an OpenVMS VAX version.
