M7761

Order Number: XX-C4C77-89

This document is an Engineering Change Order Log (DEC-O-LOG) detailing modifications and corrections for the M7761 TU60 Read/Write and Servo component from October 1972 to August 1973.

The changes address a variety of issues, broadly categorized as:

  1. Initial Production & Documentation: Early ECOs focused on rectifying manufacturing-related problems, such as updating board layouts (M7761-00001), ensuring circuit schematics matched the physical board (M7761-00002), and correcting documentation errors for purchased parts and component specifications (M7761-00003).

  2. Read/Write Circuit Functionality: Improvements were made to ensure read circuits cleared completely (M7761-00004), enhance protection against tape erasure during power-down by adjusting threshold levels (M7761-00006), and reduce read/write errors caused by noise generated during tape unloading/rewinding (M7761-00006).

  3. Tape Handling and Sensing: Several changes addressed tape mechanism reliability, including speeding up End-Of-Tape (EOT) leader sensing by removing capacitors (M7761-00005). A significant recurring problem involved 74123 one-shot circuits causing cassettes to over-rewind past the clear leader to the end of the tape, which was fixed by adding retriggering prevention circuits (M7761-D0008, M7761-D008A, M7761-D008B, M7761-0010A, M7761-D0011). Another correction prevented tape splice breakage during rewind by adding capacitors to leader sensing circuits (M7761-B0009).

  4. General Circuit Refinements: Multiple component and circuit adjustments were made to improve overall performance, such as redesigning balance and timing circuits for wider adjustment ranges (M7761-00010), replacing slow Zener diodes (M7761-00010), ensuring the write gate connector was fail-safe (M7761-00010), and refining the ENERGY CLEAR MONO timing (M7761-0010A).

Many of these changes reflect an iterative development process, with subsequent ECOs refining or superseding earlier ones (e.g., M7761-D0008 series replacing M7761-00007).
