RK05-Exerciser

Maintenance Manual

Order Number: EK-RK05-MM-002

This document is a maintenance manual for the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) RK05-Exerciser, a portable unit designed for off-line testing and troubleshooting of the RK05 Disk Drive without requiring a processor or drive controller.

The manual is divided into six chapters and two appendices:

  • General Information: Provides an overview of the RK05 Exerciser, including its physical components (chassis, bus terminator, positioner and writer exerciser modules, front panel, cables) and specifications (environmental, power, packaging).
  • Unpacking, Set-up, and Acceptance Testing: Details the procedures for unpacking the exerciser, connecting it to one or multiple RK05 Disk Drives via Unibus and power cables, and performing acceptance tests for both the Writer Exerciser and Positioner Exerciser Modules.
  • Operation: Describes the exerciser's front panel controls and indicators, and its four positioner operating modes (Step, Alternate, Oscillate, Random). It also outlines procedures for positioning read/write heads and performing write/erase operations.
  • Theory of Operation: Offers a detailed functional and logic-level description of the exerciser's writer and positioner circuitry, including components like sector decoders, write control logic, strobe oscillators, address counters, and fault detection logic. Flow diagrams illustrate operational sequences.
  • Maintenance: Lists required test equipment, provides a preventive maintenance schedule (monthly and quarterly tasks), and includes a troubleshooting flow diagram for corrective maintenance.
  • RK05 Disk Drive Maintenance Using the RK05 Exerciser: Explains comprehensive alignment, check, and adjustment procedures for the RK05 Disk Drive, covering alignment cartridges (RK05K-AC and 2315 CE), servo system timing, read/write head alignment, index/sector timing, and cartridge receiver alignment.
  • Appendices: Contains schematics and truth tables for various integrated circuit chips used in the exerciser, along with engineering drawing sets.

The manual is designed to equip service personnel with the necessary information for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the RK05 Disk Drive using the RK05-Exerciser.
