ASYS Monitor

This document describes the ASYS MONITOR, an executive routine developed by Theodore Strollo at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, which serves as the central control program for the AIDEX System.

Its primary function is to manage and automate the software development lifecycle, including:

• Initiating assemblies and compilations.
• Loading relocatable binary programs.
• Searching and loading routines from the ASYS LIBRARY.
• Punching relocatable or absolute binary versions of programs onto paper tape.
• Providing an interface to the ASYS EDITOR for magnetic tape operations and the ASYS debugging system.

The ASYS MONITOR and its core components (like the AMP assembler, AIDEX compiler, LOADER, and various utilities) reside on the "ASYS SYSTEM TAPE." Users interact with the MONITOR through specific command statements entered via a typewriter or paper tape reader. The document details the command repertoire, typical job workflows, error diagnostics, and appendices covering the system tape's structure, maintenance procedures (including how to update the system and add macros), the ASYS LIBRARY Tape Maker (for creating and editing program libraries), and the use of hardware sense switches to control system behavior.
