This user guide describes MacTerminal® 3.0, an application that enables Apple Macintosh computers to communicate with other computers (personal, minicomputers, mainframes) locally or remotely. This special edition is part of the PATHWORKS™ for Macintosh product.
MacTerminal operates using the Macintosh Communications Toolbox, which provides specialized "communications tools" categorized into three main types:
- Connection tools: Define the communication link established (e.g., Apple Modem, AppleTalk ADSP, LAT, Serial).
- Terminal emulation tools: Allow the Macintosh to imitate various computer terminals (e.g., TTY, VT102, VT320).
- File transfer tools: Facilitate sending and receiving files, including protocols like XMODEM (MacBinary, Straight XMODEM, Text) and Text File Transfer.
The guide covers essential topics for users, including:
- Setting up session documents: Configuring communication parameters for various connection types (e.g., VAX, BBS, commercial information services).
- Managing communications sessions: Opening, maintaining, and closing connections, as well as exchanging information (typing, pasting text, sending and receiving files).
- Handling session data: Saving, clearing, displaying, copying, and printing session data.
- Commands Reference: Detailed descriptions of MacTerminal's menu commands.
- Troubleshooting: Solutions for common problems related to communication, terminal emulation, data transfer, memory, printing, and network issues.
- Appendices: Information on alert messages, popular on-line services, pin assignments for ports, and an ASCII character chart.
MacTerminal offers an expandable communications environment, allowing for additional tools, and supports multiple simultaneous connections. Key system requirements include a Macintosh Plus or later model, System 6.0.4 or later, Macintosh Communications Toolbox 1.0 or later, and MacTerminal 3.0.
