Pathworks for DOS NetWare Coexistence SSA 34.76.01-A Jan92

Order Number: AE-PG4WB-TH

This document, a System Support Addendum (SSA 34.76.01-A) for PATHWORKS for DOS (NetWare Coexistence), Version 1.1, outlines the hardware, software, and configuration requirements for running this product.

Key Requirements:

  • Hardware:

    • An Intel 8086- to 80486-based personal computer with a minimum of 640KB system memory.
    • A diskette drive capable of reading 5.25-inch (360KB) or 3.5-inch (720KB) diskettes for installation. A 720KB or larger drive is required for booting a "floppy key disk."
    • For asynchronous PATHWORKS networks (using DECnet), at least 12MB of free hard disk space is required.
    • Network connections can be either a single Ethernet or Token Ring controller for both PATHWORKS and NetWare, or separate Ethernet/Token Ring for NetWare and an asynchronous connection for PATHWORKS (DECnet).
    • A power supply of at least 130 watts (for IBM XTs with DEPCA).
  • Software:

    • PATHWORKS for DOS: Version 4.0 (Ethernet controllers only) or Version 4.1 (Ethernet/Token Ring or asynchronous DECnet).
    • Novell NetWare: Supported versions include Advanced NetWare V2.15/V2.2, NetWare 386 V3.1/V3.11, and NetWare for VMS V2.1.
    • DOS Operating System: Various versions from V3.3 to V5.0 are supported across different PC vendors (COMPAQ, DECstation, IBM, Olivetti, Tandy, Toshiba, Zenith). Digital recommends using the OS supplied by the PC vendor and upgrading DOS V4.0 to V4.01 or V5.0 if available.
    • PATHWORKS Server Support: The product works with PATHWORKS for VMS V4.1, PATHWORKS for ULTRIX V1.0/V1.1, and PATHWORKS for OS/2 V1.1/V2.0.

Optional Components:

  • Optional Hardware: Support for Expanded Memory Specification V4.0, various Digital peripherals (printers, keyboards, mice, video adapters), Ethernet and Token Ring controllers (specifically Digital's EtherWORKS family via NDIS drivers, including older DEPCAs), asynchronous communications, Microsoft Windows, and PC DECwindows Motif.
  • Optional Software: PATHWORKS for DOS (TCP/IP) for TCP/IP LAN capabilities.

Compatibility and Limitations:

  • The software is designed to comply with the NDIS Version 2.0.1 interface. However, individual vendor interpretations of the specification may vary, potentially affecting functionality.
  • Digital's NDIS implementation aims to provide a choice of Ethernet and Token Ring controllers, but is not intended to support simultaneous operation with arbitrary networking products from other vendors.
  • Supported configurations are based on using native hardware and operating system software supplied by the base system vendor.

Distribution: The product is distributed on RX31 and RX24 Floppy Diskettes.

The document includes extensive lists of supported base system models from COMPAQ, Digital, IBM, Olivetti, Tandy, and Zenith, emphasizing that support for specific models as clients is contingent upon meeting the detailed hardware and software requirements.
