The DECserver 250 is Digital's first network server dedicated to connecting a variety of Digital parallel and serial printers to an Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN). It acts as a cost-effective solution for distributed printing, allowing printers to become shared resources available to any CPU or user on the network.

Key Features and Capabilities:

• Connectivity: Features one Ethernet connection, two standard Dataproducts parallel printer interfaces, and four RS-232 serial printer interfaces (three for printers, one for a printer/terminal with modem control).
• Capacity: Simultaneously supports up to two high-speed parallel printers (up to 2,000 lines per minute) and four serial printers (two at 19.2K Baud and two at 9600 Baud).
• Network Integration: Compatible with Digital VAX, MicroVAX, and PDP CPUs running VMS or ULTRIX, using the Local Area Transport (LAT) protocol. Its software is down-line loaded from a Phase IV DECnet host.
• Flexible Placement: Frees printers from direct CPU connections, enabling flexible placement in offices or secure areas. With a fiber optic interface (LLF01), parallel printers can be located up to 1,500 feet from the server.
• Ease of Use & Migration: Designed for easy migration from direct CPU-to-printer connections to a networked environment without requiring modifications to existing printers. It features dedicated buffers for parallel and serial ports for optimal performance.
• Reliability & Diagnostics: Includes self-test diagnostics, on-line testing, load balancing to distribute user load, and the ability to protect print files through an "up-line dump" in case of network or printer issues.
• Physical: Compact design (19"W x 4.6"H x 12.3"D, 13 lbs) suitable for table-top or rack mounting.
