System Hardware Installation or Modification

This document provides technical instructions for the initial hardware installation and configuration of the ETOS operating system on PDP-8 computer systems. It covers the following key areas:

• Installation Overview: Defines the process of moving the ETOS software from the provided distribution pack (typically an RK05 or System Industries removable pack) to a configured production pack, alongside necessary hardware adjustments.

• Booting Procedures: Offers detailed, step-by-step instructions for booting the OS/8 environment, which is required before installing ETOS. It includes methods for various hardware configurations, such as:

  • Booting via hardware bootstrap modules (e.g., MI8, KM8-AA).
  • Manual initiation using computer front panels (for PDP-8E, 8M, and 8A models).
  • Booting from non-RK05 peripherals using ODT or system commands.
  • Specific instructions for DEC Data Systems using bootable floppy diskettes.

• System Industries (SI) Packs: Explains the specific requirement to boot from a removable SI pack and transfer the software to a fixed disk pack for daily production use.
