Input/Output, Interface, Installation, Operation, and Maintenance

This document serves as a technical manual for the PDP-8 computer system, covering five primary areas:

• Input/Output: Details the signaling between peripheral equipment and the PDP-8, including the design of device selectors and the specific operation of the Teletype Model 33-ASR and the Type 189 Analog-to-Digital Converter.
• Interface: Explains how to establish electrical connections between the PDP-8 and I/O devices. It outlines signal types, loading/driving considerations, and summarizes programmed and data-break transfer interface connections.
• Installation: Provides physical requirements, environmental considerations, and step-by-step procedures for installing the computer system and its associated Teletype unit.
• Operation: Describes the use of the operator console controls and indicators. It includes procedures for manual data storage, loading data via programs, off-line Teletype operation, and instructions for assembling programs using PAL. It also provides a reference table for Teletype character codes.
• Maintenance: Outlines preventive and corrective maintenance procedures. This includes instructions for performing mechanical checks, testing the power supply, executing diagnostic "Maindec" programs to locate faults, and specific maintenance routines for the Analog-to-Digital converter. It concludes with lists of recommended spare parts and modules.
