Cos-310 Character Set and Files

This document contains technical specifications for the COS-310 system, divided into two main sections:

• Appendix A (Character Set): Details how alphanumeric characters are stored in six-bit binary (two characters per word). It provides tables for numeric-to-alphanumeric conversion, including a specific encoding method for negative numbers where the high-order bit of the low-order digit is set.
• Appendix B (Files): Describes the file structure for the COS-310 system, covering four file types: source, binary, data, and system. It defines how data is formatted within these files, including word count calculations and storage layouts. It also provides a visual representation (Figure B-1) of the Monitor organization on system devices, detailing memory block allocations from the bootstrap to the file area.
