High Resolution Mass Spectrometer Data System

Order Number: DEC-12-HIRES-MS-D

This document serves as a manual for the HIRES-MS data system, which is designed to interface with and acquire data from a high-resolution mass spectrometer. The system operates on the OS8/12 operating system and involves a multi-phase process to transform raw spectrometer signals into useful analytical data.

Key components of the system include:

  • Data Acquisition (HRACQ): The system acquires data from an AIP-12 analog subsystem at a rate of 10KC. It performs thresholding to isolate peak envelopes, which are then stored on a mass storage device (disk or LINCtape).
  • Processing Programs (FORTRAN IV): The system uses three primary programs—HRMS1, HRMS2, and HRMS3—to perform data reduction:

    • HRMS1: Performs peak detection, integration, and centroid determination to create a peak data file.
    • HRMS2: Performs mass calibration by matching internal standard peaks from a calibration file to the acquired data.
    • HRMS3: Handles final processing, including intensity normalization, elemental composition calculations, and the building of standard mass calibration files.
  • Data Manipulation: The system includes utilities for data editing and building customized mass calibration files (e.g., using perfluorokerosene/PFK fragments).

  • System Building: The document provides detailed technical instructions for configuring the OS8 environment, transferring files from LINCtape to disk, and building the necessary core image and loader files (HRACQ, HRMS1, HRMS2, and HRMS3) on an RK8 disk.

The manual concludes with practical examples of the workflow and instructions for modifying the HRACQ configuration (such as adjusting pre-acquisition dummy scan counts) using the ODT utility.
