Decus Proceedings 1962

Order Number: XX-XXXXX-XX

This document serves as the first formal proceedings of the Digital Equipment Computer Users Society (DECUS), covering two significant meetings held in 1962: a symposium on "Image Processing and Displays" at the ITEK Corporation in May, and the Annual Meeting at AFCRL in October.

The proceedings are organized into several thematic sections:

  • Utility Programs and Techniques: Includes papers on a peripheral processor for large computers, system tapes for the PDP-1, tape editing software (TED), debugging tools (SCOPETRACE), and matrix manipulation packages.
  • Problem Oriented Techniques: Covers applications of the PDP-1 in areas such as detection station placement, optical design, multivariable system analysis, oceanographic data display, and the popular real-time game, "SPACEWAR!".
  • Hardware and Input-Output Techniques: Discusses film reading systems, functional descriptions of ITEK display systems, time-sharing systems for the PDP-1, and applications of the PDP-4.
  • Panel Discussion: A debate regarding the relative merits of two major programming languages for the PDP-1: MACRO and DECAL.

The volume also includes a foreword by DECUS President C. M. Walter, which reflects on the rapid evolution of small-scale processors from simple substitutes for large central computers into flexible, real-time tools that enable closer man-machine interaction. The appendices provide the 1962 annual meeting agenda, lists of attendees, and an author index.
