VAX/VMS Operating System, Version 2.0, is a reliable, high-performance, multiuser operating system designed for VAX-11 series systems. It supports concurrent execution of timesharing, data processing, and real-time applications, and serves as a base for high-availability and transaction-intensive systems.

Key features include:

• Ease of Use & Management: Straightforward installation, automatic hardware configuration, and a powerful, extensible DIGITAL Command Language (DCL) with system assistance facilities (like HELP) for interactive and batch processing.
• Development Environment: Extensive tools for application development, supporting a broad variety of high-level languages (e.g., BASIC, COBOL-74, FORTRAN, PASCAL, BLISS-32, assembly) and offering both VAX-11 native mode and PDP-11 compatibility mode program development. Tools include editors, a symbolic debugger, LINKER, LIBRARIAN, and a PATCH utility.
• Data Management: Robust VAX-11 Record Management Services (RMS) for device-independent access to sequential, relative, and multikey indexed files, including record sharing. File Management Services support multivolume disk sets, hierarchical directories, automatic allocation, and magnetic tape operations, along with a file SORT utility.
• System Operations & Performance: Features virtual memory management for large programs (up to 4GB addressing), event-driven, pre-emptive priority scheduling for real-time responsiveness, and multistream, multiqueue batch processing. It ensures system security and resource control through User Identification Codes (UICs), privileges, and quotas.
• Reliability: Enhanced by automatic error monitoring, on-line diagnostics, and recovery utilities, including auto-restart after power failures, verified by a User Environment Test Package (UETP).

VAX/VMS 2.0 also offers host development capabilities for RSX-11M and RSX-11S systems, facilitating cross-system program and data migration, and adheres to numerous ANSI, FIPS, and ISO standards.
