This document serves as the System Manager's Guide for ETOS Version 5B, an extended time-shared operating system for PDP-8 systems. It is intended for use by the individual responsible for system operations, such as starting, stopping, and backing up the system. Due to the potential impact of some administrative functions on system validity (such as file deletion), this guide is strictly for the system manager and should not be distributed to end users.

The document provides comprehensive technical details, including:

• System Organization: Hardware requirements (PDP-8/E, 8/F, 8/M, or 8/A), disk layouts (RK05 and System Industries), memory organization, and an overview of real and virtual OS/8 and COS environments.
• Installation and Configuration: Procedures for booting, formatting, and copying disk packs, as well as enabling various system features like time-sharing, clocks, and terminal characteristics.
• Operations: Guidance on managing ETOS accounts, performing privileged operations, error diagnosis, and system recovery.
• Software Inventory: Extensive tables listing files distributed with the system, categorized by their function (e.g., OS/8 CUSPs, ETOS CUSPs, compilers, and utilities) and their documentation references.
