This document contains documentation for two programs in the DECUS Program Library: SCOPE and CNGMWA.

SCOPE (Scope-Oriented PS/8 Editor) SCOPE is a symbolic editor for the PDP-12 computer running the PS/8 system. It allows users to create and modify ASCII source files, with the text currently being edited displayed on the PDP-12 scope. Key features and functions include:

  • Cursor-based editing: Users move a cursor to navigate through the manuscript to perform insertions, deletions, and modifications.
  • Navigation: Commands and control keys allow for moving forward or backward by frame, line, or character.
  • Special Commands: A set of commands (initiated by a line feed) enables locating specific line numbers, searching for character strings, clearing the manuscript, and exiting the program.
  • Character Handling: Because it uses 6-bit internal codes, it includes an "extended character convention" to input non-displayable 8-bit ASCII characters using an ALT MODE escape sequence.
  • Internal Operation: It is adapted from the LAP6W editor and primarily utilizes LINC code, interfacing with the PS/8 system via a PAL-8 section.

CNGMWA CNGMWA is a utility program designed specifically to manage the memory requirements of the SCOPE editor. Its primary purpose is to change the size of the "Manuscript Working Area" (MWA)—the internal scratch space where the source file resides while being edited. Users can specify a new MWA size (in decimal 256-word blocks), and the program will generate a new copy of the SCOPE editor configured to that size.
