Modified Readable Punch

Order Number: XX-XXXXX-XX

This document describes the "Modified Readable Punch" program for the PDP-8 computer (DECUS No. 8-366). The program enables users to type ASCII characters (240–337) on an ASR-33 keyboard and generate a readable 8x6 matrix outline of that character on paper tape.

Key features and requirements:

  • Improvements: Compared to earlier versions (8-68a and 8-106), it features increased readability using a 6-word matrix and allows for selectable output devices (High or Low-Speed Punch) via the switch register.
  • Requirements: Requires a basic 4K PDP-8 system with an ASR-33 teleprinter and punch. It occupies 477 decimal core locations.
  • Operation: Users load the program via BIN or RIM loader, set the switch register to select the desired output device, and begin typing. The system pauses for input and provides character outlines until the user types "RETURN" to terminate.
