VAX/VMS I/O

User's Guide

Order Number: AD-D028A-T1

This document serves as "Update Notice No.1" to the VAX/VMS I/O User's Guide, published in February 1979. Its primary purpose is to integrate software changes and additions introduced in VAX/VMS Version 1.5, most notably the inclusion of a driver to support the LPA-11K Laboratory Peripheral Accelerator.

The main manual (Order No. AA-D028A-TE) provides system programmers with detailed information for direct interaction with VAX/VMS I/O device drivers using VAX-11 FORTRAN IV-PLUS or VAX-11 MACRO assembly language. It is not intended for users relying on VAX-11 Record Management Services.

The guide covers fundamental aspects of VAX/VMS I/O, including an overview of operations, system services, quotas, privileges, and protection mechanisms. It explains I/O function encoding, how to issue I/O requests, and how to retrieve device-specific information. The manual is structured into chapters dedicated to individual device drivers: terminals, disks, magnetic tapes, line printers, card readers, mailboxes, DMC11 synchronous communications lines, and, as added by this update, the LPA11-K Laboratory Peripheral Accelerator. It also includes a section on the QIO interface to file system Ancillary Control Processes (ACPs), and appendices summarizing I/O function codes and arguments.
