DECnet—ULTRIX DECnet-Internet Gateway Use and Management

This document is the DECnet-ULTRIX DECnet-Internet Gateway Use and Management manual, published in May 1990. It provides instructions for installing, using, and managing the DECnet-Internet Gateway software (DECnet-ULTRIX V4.0, ULTRIX V4.0).

The Gateway enables bidirectional communication (remote login, mail exchange, file access, and transfer) between DECnet systems (such as DECnet-VAX, DECnet-RSX, and DECnet-DOS) and Internet systems (like ULTRIX and those based on Berkeley 4.2/4.3 BSD TCP/IP implementations).

The manual is aimed at both:

• End-users (Chapters 2 & 3), detailing how to use the gateway from an Internet host (e.g., ftp, telnet) and from a DECnet node (e.g., SET HOST, MAIL, COPY) for file operations, mail, and remote login.
• System managers (Chapters 1 & 4), covering installation (referencing other manuals for full details), controlling access (bidirectional or unidirectional), logging connections, and addressing special considerations like access-control length restrictions and compatibility with non-UNIX-based Internet systems. Managers require superuser privileges and network management familiarity.
