Software Product Description

The ULTRIX Operating System, Version 4.5, is Digital Equipment Corporation's native UNIX® implementation for its VAX, MicroVAX, VAXstation, VAXserver, Digital RISC DECsystem, and DECstation systems. It functions as an interactive, demand-paged, virtual memory, multi-processor, time-sharing operating system.

Key features include:

• File System: Hierarchical structure supporting both local ULTRIX File System (UFS) and Sun Network File System (NFS) for transparent network access, with POSIX-compatible locking and synchronous write options for database applications.
• Virtual Memory: Enhanced 4.3BSD and System V-derived virtual memory with full demand paging, shared memory, and page locking.
• Multiprocessor Support: Kernel enhancements for both RISC and VAX multiprocessor systems, enabling shared kernel images and synchronized data access.
• OPEN SCSI CAM: A new software architecture (for RISC only) using Common Access Method (CAM) to simplify support for third-party SCSI devices.
• System Administration & Security: Numerous administration enhancements (e.g., graphical user account manager, network installation, extended user limits) and security features compliant with C2 security levels, including auditing, trusted path, enhanced login/password, gateway packet screening, and Kerberos authentication. Optional data encryption is available.
• Communication & Networking: Extensive support for various lines (Asynchronous, Synchronous), network protocols (TCP/IP, DECnet over Ethernet, CI Network, X.25, FDDI), name services (BIND, HESIOD), network APIs (XTI), packet filtering, SNMP, IBM terminal emulation, LAT, Remote Procedure Call (DECrpc), and Network Time Protocol (NTP).
• Program Development: Tools like MIPS-ANSI C 3.0 (RISC), VAX C/ULTRIX (VAX), and DEC C for ULTRIX (ANSI-compliant), plus the CDA Toolkit for compound document architecture and DECthreads for user-mode multi-threading.
• Compatibility & Standards: Based on Berkeley 4BSD and supports System V Interface Definition (SVID) and POSIX 1003.2 Draft 8 commands. It adheres to numerous Internet RFC protocols and ISO 9660 for CD-ROMs.
• Internationalization: Comprehensive Native Language System (NLS) based on XPG3, supporting various languages, message catalogs, and 8-bit transparent operations across the system.

ULTRIX 4.5 is customer-installed, licensed per CPU, with optional encryption, and source code availability for licensed users. It supports a wide range of VAX, MicroVAX, and Digital RISC hardware configurations.
