This document provides instructions for upgrading the processor(s) in a DIGITAL Personal Workstation, which supports up to two Pentium® II processors at speeds up to 533MHz. It outlines the process for upgrading from a single processor to a faster single processor or a dual-processor configuration.
Key considerations for a successful upgrade, especially for dual processors, include:
The installation steps involve: powering off and disconnecting the workstation, removing the outside cover, carefully releasing and removing the existing processor module, removing the terminator card, installing the new processor(s) and VRM(s), setting appropriate switch configurations on the processor module (referencing the System Reference Manual), replacing the processor module, and finally reassembling the workstation.
Crucially, operating system modifications are required for dual-processor configurations. Windows 95 does not support dual processors; therefore, users running Windows 95 must upgrade to Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0 to utilize a second processor, as these operating systems support multi-processor systems. Specific instructions for Windows NT 4.0 upgrades are found in a separate "Pentium® II Processor Upgrade Kit Upgrade Instructions" document. Users are advised to contact their DIGITAL sales representative for future upgrades and BIOS revisions.
