Digital MultiStack System Stacking Unit

Installation and Configuration

Order Number: EK-DETXX-IN

This manual provides instructions for installing, configuring, and managing the Digital MultiStack System Stacking Unit, which enables the creation of fully-managed Ethernet networks. The system supports up to 16 Digital 90-series modules (such as repeater hubs, access servers, bridges, and routers) in physical, distributed, or rack/cabinet configurations.

Key features include:

  • Flexible and Cost-Effective Networking: Offers robust networking performance and functionality without the overhead of chassis-based hubs.
  • Centralized Management: Allows the entire stack to be managed as a single management domain using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and Digital's HUBwatch graphical user interface.
  • Module Compatibility: Utilizes any Digital 90-series module, some of which come preassembled as stackable hubs.
  • Resilient Design: Supports hot-swappable modules and can be configured with a ring topology for the management channel to enhance resiliency, though the ThinWire data network should not be a ring.
  • Connectivity: Uses ThinWire coaxial cable for the data network (max 185m) and UTP cables for the serial management channel (max 420m). An optional AUI port is available for specific modules.

Installation involves unpacking the components, setting a unique position identifier for each stackable hub, connecting ThinWire cables for the data network and UTP cables for the management channel, connecting the power supply, and setting up the management agent. Operation can be verified using LED indicators on the units and the HUBwatch GUI. Troubleshooting guidance focuses on interpreting LED statuses and ensuring proper cable connections.
