Digital ATM Modular PHY Cards Installation

This document serves as an installation manual for DIGITAL ATM Modular Physical Layer (modPHY) cards, providing instructions for their setup and operational verification. These modPHY cards are customer-installable, field-replaceable single-port daughter cards that facilitate ATM connectivity across various platforms and media types at speeds up to 155.52 Mb/s.

The manual is structured to guide users with experience in system hardware through:

• An introduction to ATM technology and the modPHY cards, detailing their features like hotswap support and compatibility with diverse media (Multimode Fiber, Single-mode Fiber, Unshielded Twisted-Pair, Screened Twisted-Pair, T3, E3, T1, and E1).
• Comprehensive installation procedures, including unpacking, preparing the system (removing existing cards or slot covers), and physically installing the modPHY card, with important cautions regarding static electricity.
• Detailed information on using the modPHY card, which covers initialization, interpreting LED indicators for operational status, verifying connectivity via loopback testing, and configuring various Physical Layer parameters (diagnostic mode, clock modes, framing, cell mapping, and line buildout). It stresses the importance of matching these parameters at both ends of a connection.
• Appendices offering extensive media connection details, including instructions for attaching and removing cables and connectors, specifications for different cable types, and vendor information.
