This document provides step-by-step instructions for upgrading a DECstation 5000 Model 1xx to a DEC 3000 Model 300 AXP. It begins by listing which hardware options (drives, expansion boxes, input devices, graphics modules, memory, monitors, and TURBOchannel devices) are compatible for the upgrade and which are not.
The upgrade process includes:
- Checking components: Verifying the contents of the System Kit and Accessory Kit provided for the upgrade.
- Pre-upgrade configuration: Recording the current SCSI ID settings of drives in the existing DECstation system.
- Disassembly of the DECstation: Safely turning off the system, disconnecting cables, loosening the cover-release screw, and removing the system unit cover, front drive panel, existing fixed disk drives, and option modules.
- SCSI ID adjustment: Instructions for setting the correct SCSI IDs on the drives being upgraded, particularly noting that DEC 3000 factory-installed drives use SCSI ID 3. Specific diagrams for RZ23L, RZ24L, and RZ24 drives are provided.
- New hardware installation: Attaching new mounting brackets to the drives.
- Completing the upgrade: Referring to external DEC 3000 Model 300/300L AXP documentation for installing new options and setting up the system. Users are instructed to test the installation using the
show device command. Finally, the old DECstation unit should be packed and returned, and the Digital service representative contacted to upgrade the hardware service contract.
