Installation Guide

Order Number: EK-4D10W-IG

This document is an installation guide for the DIGITAL PowerStorm 4D10T Graphics Option, a single expansion-slot, 32-bit PCI bus graphics accelerator designed for Alpha workstations and Intel systems running Windows NT. It covers both 2D and 3D graphics acceleration.

The PowerStorm 4D10T comes in two memory configurations: 4 MB or 8 MB of SGRAM. Both versions feature a standard 15-pin VGA connector, while the 8 MB version (SN-PBXGK-AB) additionally includes a 5-pin mini-DIN connector for stereo viewing (with future software support for CRYSTAL EYES goggles) and a video input connector. The guide provides detailed pinouts for these connectors and lists key specifications such as a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 at 75 Hz, 32-bit double-buffered color planes, and 16-bit Z-buffer.

The installation procedure is divided into two main parts:

  1. Software Driver Installation (Windows NT 4.0): This involves installing 2D and 3D drivers from diskettes or a CD-ROM via the Display Properties in the Windows NT Control Panel. The process includes selecting the driver path and restarting the system.
  2. Hardware Installation: This section details the physical installation of the graphics card. It requires powering down the computer, using an antistatic wriststrap, removing the computer cover, inserting the PowerStorm 4D10T into an available PCI expansion slot, securing it, replacing the cover, and reconnecting the monitor before powering the system back on.

After installation, the guide explains how to change Windows NT display characteristics, such as screen resolution and refresh rate, through the Display Properties settings, advising users to check their monitor's compatibility beforehand.
