This document is the first of a three-volume set containing articles that describe the ULTRIX-32 system. It covers various utilities and software tools available on the system, ranging from getting started procedures to details of screen updating and cursor movement facilities.
Volume 1 includes articles for general use, with Part 1 introducing the entire set. Part 2, "Getting Started," is recommended for those unfamiliar with operating systems and programming, or new to ULTRIX-32 and UNIX systems. It covers basic concepts and simple procedures. Part 3 discusses five text editors: ed, edit, vi, ex, and sed. Part 4 introduces the Bourne Shell and the C Shell, which serve as user interfaces to the system's utilities. Part 5 covers document preparation, including text formatting utilities like NROFF and TROFF, and utilities for typesetting mathematical expressions, setting up tables, and creating bibliographical references. Part 6 includes articles on unsupported software. The articles provide authoritative and accurate information, though some may be dated. A master index at the end of each volume identifies topics across all three volumes.
