ULTRIX-32 Guide to System Environment Setup

This document, "ULTRIX-32 Guide to System Environment Setup (Version 3.0)," is a manual for system administrators responsible for setting up and maintaining a working environment on ULTRIX systems.

The guide covers essential system administration tasks across six main chapters and an appendix:

1. Modifying System Files: Details how to prepare for and modify critical system files, including the password (/etc/passwd), group (/etc/group), terminal initialization (/etc/ttys), file system table (/etc/fstab), sendmail aliases (/usr/lib/aliases), clock daemon table (/usr/lib/crontab), and the message-of-the-day (/etc/motd) files.
2. Adding and Deleting Users: Provides instructions on user account management using commands like adduser and removeuser.
3. Adding Devices: Explains how to add terminals, pseudoterminals, disk, and tape drives to the system, primarily utilizing the MAKEDEV script.
4. Setting Up the Print System: Guides users through configuring and controlling printers, offering both manual setup procedures and the use of the lprsetup utility.
5. Adding and Deleting Software Subsets: Describes how to manage software components (listing, loading, adding, deleting, and verifying) using the setld program for disk space optimization.
6. Monitoring and Managing System Performance: Offers guidelines for monitoring system performance, including managing process scheduling priority (renice), generating system accounting reports (user logins, command usage, printer usage via ac, sa, pac), and checking interprocess communications facilities status (ipcs).
7. Appendix A (Device Mnemonics): Lists and defines the mnemonics used with the MAKEDEV script for attaching hardware or software devices.

The manual assumes the user is familiar with basic ULTRIX commands and system configuration concepts.
