This Field Change Order (FCO DEBNA-R001), issued January 5, 1988, addresses a firmware bug in T1034 DEBNA modules that causes VMS machine-checks or restarts, particularly when using short transmit packets (e.g., TSM, remote console activity).
The FCO requires retrofitting all T1034 DEBNA modules below Revision "E" in VAX 82X0/83X0 and VAX 85X0/8700/8800 systems. This upgrade involves installing new firmware ROMs (Part Revision "E") provided in a special FCO kit (EQ-01500-01), along with updated ETDRIVER and diagnostic software from accompanying floppies (EQ-01500-02, EQ-01500-03).
The installation process, estimated to take one hour, mandates running VMS V4.5 or above. It includes updating software, safely shutting down the system, physically accessing the T1034 module (with strict electrostatic discharge precautions using a VELOSTAT kit), replacing the old ROMs (if the module is Rev D3 or D4), and then powering up the system to verify functionality with diagnostics. Field spares stock should also be upgraded, and the FCO activity must be reported on the LARS system.
