This Field Change Order (FCO CI780-R00D1) addresses functional problems encountered during VAXcluster testing, where the CI780 controller failed to conform to architectural specifications, causing "Miscellaneous Errors Type 12 & 13" and subsequent VMS CI-port re-initializations.
The FCO mandates a retrofit of all CI750s to Revision level "D1" by releasing V4.0 CI Microcode. This comprehensive update, estimated at 1 hour per node, incorporates both software and, for older revisions, hardware changes. For CI780s at Revision "C1" or "01", the update involves installing the Revision 4 CI780.BIN file on the system console media. For CI780s at Revision "01", a hardware rework is also required, which includes system shutdown, electrostatic discharge precautions, removal of the L0101 module, replacement of specific microcode ROMs, and installation of a "H1" wire marker. Notably, this FCO includes the previous CI780-R00C1, simplifying the upgrade path for systems that have not yet reached Revision "C1".
Post-installation, functional diagnostics (such as ESCGA, EVGAA) must be run to verify the CI780's functionality. Appendices provide detailed procedures for identifying microcode file versions and checking ROM/RAM microcode on a halted CPU. The FCO was released on June 26, 1985, with parts availability in July 1985.
