FCO CI750-E1-1004 Rev B, Numerous functional errors, sanity timer

Order Number: FQ-01421-XXX

This Field Change Order (FCO CI750-E1-1004 Rev B) outlines the required steps to upgrade CI750 systems to Revision Level "E1," incorporating ECO L0101-MK009. The primary goal is to resolve several functional errors, including "arbitration timeout," "internal queue retry error," "BUFFER LENGTH VIOL.," potential DATAGRAM FREE Q corruption, theoretical BUFFER ambiguity, and V6.0 CI ucode Cluster hang problems. The upgrade also introduces a variable sanity timer.

The FCO mandates upgrading the L0101 Part Revision to "J1" and the CI780 MICROCODE to V7.0. It supersedes a previous release dated September 17, 1986, and corrects process step numbering. Prerequisites for this FCO include the prior installation of FCO CI750-R-00C1, meaning CI750s must be running at least V4.0 CI micro-code with V3.0 PROMs on the L0101 module. The estimated installation time is 1 hour per node.

The upgrade involves:

  1. Preparation: Verifying current CI micro-code and PROM revisions, and backing up existing console media.
  2. Software Update: Restoring CI780.BIN V7.0, diagnostics, and exerciser files from supplied magtapes (EQ-01421-02 or EQ-01421-03) to the system disk, then copying the CI780.BIN V7.0 file to the console media using a block transfer.
  3. Hardware Replacement: Performing a system shutdown (customer recommended for VAXclusters), disconnecting BNCIA cables (using loopback attenuators), and replacing six (6) old V3.0 PROMs on the L0101 module with new V7.0 PROMs. Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive (ESDS) precautions using a VELOSTAT kit are crucial. The L0101 module is then marked "J1."
  4. Verification: Powering up the system, running LEVEL-III offline diagnostics (EVGAA/B V3.5, which requires new V7.0 compatible diagnostics), and using the DCL command $ "SHOW CLUSTER/CONTINUOUS <CR> ADD RP_REVIS <CR>" to confirm the new PROM and WCS revisions are active and operational.

Upon successful completion, the BNCIA cables are reconnected, the system is booted into the VAXcluster environment, the FCO activity is reported, and the Site Management Guide is updated. It is advised to retain a duplicate copy of the old console media and V3.0 PROMs for potential expedient downgrades.
