This document, Field Change Order (FCO) 85XBA-R001, details the procedure to retrofit all VAX 8500/8550 systems to Revision Level "B1". The retrofit incorporates several Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) to address various issues:
- ECO F1001-LK005 resolves a problem with the MCL module where incorrect "Error Page Address" updates could prevent the operating system from identifying memory errors.
- ECO F1001-LK006 introduces a new MCA version for performance enhancement.
- ECOs F1001-LK008 and F1001-LK009 specify the replacement of older National 8480 parts with National 8480A in the F1001 module.
The installation procedure, estimated to take 1.0 hour, involves:
- Shutting down the system and powering it off.
- Employing ESD safety precautions to replace the F1001 Memory Control Board (Part Number F1001, Rev. F3/F4, from FCO Kit EQ-01450-01) if the existing module's revision is below F3/F4.
- Powering on the CPU and executing a series of console commands and diagnostics to verify total CPU operation, including system initialization, memory checks, and specific diagnostic routines (e.g., EVKAA, EVKAB).
- Bringing up the VMS Operating System and running the User Environment Test Package (UETP).
Upon completion, the Site Management Guide must be updated, and the FCO activity reported on the LARS system. The FCO, released on June 15, 1987, affects an estimated population of 2,329 systems and requires a Field Service Tool Kit.
