FCO 85XBA-1007 Rev B, PC38N console problems

Order Number: EQ-01523-01

This Field Change Order (FCO 85XBA-1007 Rev B) addresses problems causing system crashes and console "hangs" or crashes on PC38N consoles within VAX 85X0 systems. Applicable to all VAX 85X0 systems, it updates the system revision to "F1" and supersedes Rev. A, correcting steps on pages 10 and 11. The expected console microcode revision after installation is V8.0, and the installation typically takes 2.5 hours.

The document outlines three main installation procedures:

  1. Upgrading to Nautilus Console V8.0: This involves copying nine floppy image files (containing console command languages, tasks, microcode, revision history, boot files, and VMS patches) from a network source (VOLKS::NAUTILUS$CONSOLE) and restoring them to individual floppies.
  2. Installing/Updating CONSOLE/PRODCL Application: This detailed procedure covers removing any existing CONSOLE/PRODCL application and then installing the new one from eight diskettes. It assumes P/OS V3.1 or V3.2 and PRO Communications V3.0 are already installed. The process involves copying application files to the public library and system account, and then setting CONSOLE/PRODCL as the first application to run when the PRO is powered on.
  3. Installing VMS Patches and Patched VMB.EXE: This section describes how to install VMS patches (SYSLOA8NN_V4n.VUP and TTDRIVER.EXE) and a specific patched version of VMB.EXE (VMBPAT.EXE) from a floppy disk. The VMB patch is crucial for correcting hangs and crashes that occur during system boot, especially during memory testing. Users are instructed to rename the old VMB.EXE and copy VMBPAT.EXE in its place.

Following these procedures, the system must be rebooted, and the Site Management Guide updated to reflect the FCO activity.
