TruCluster Available Server

Installation/Owner's Guide

Order Number: EK-ACAS5-IN

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for Digital Customer Services or qualified personnel to install the TruCluster Available Server (TCAS) system. The TCAS system is described as a high-performance, Alpha-based cluster designed to enhance data availability and application uptime, interconnected with Ethernet and shared storage. It operates on Digital UNIX and comes with pre-installed software for managing clusters, advanced file systems, and logical storage.

The installation process is broken down into four main phases:

  1. Introduction: Provides a general description and detailed physical, environmental, and electrical specifications for the H9A10 and H9A15 cabinets that house the TCAS system. It also outlines the components of an AlphaServer RM Series Cluster and lists the factory-installed software.
  2. Site Preparation: Covers essential steps to ensure the installation site meets all necessary physical, electrical, and environmental requirements, including adequate clearance for ventilation and servicing, and proper floor support for the heavy cabinets.
  3. Unpacking the Shipment: Details the procedures for carefully removing all packaging material, inspecting the shipment for any damage, and safely removing the system cabinet(s) from their wooden pallets using provided ramps, with emphasis on managing the cabinet's significant weight.
  4. Installing the TCAS System: Guides through positioning and leveling the cabinet, checking and connecting all factory-installed and inter-cabinet cabling (including SCSI, network, and memory channel cables), connecting the power cords, and finally, starting up the system components and booting the operating system.

Additionally, the document includes an appendix with instructions for various maintenance tasks, such as removing and replacing cabinet doors and front filler panels, adjusting the stabilizer bar for stability, and understanding the interlock system which prevents multiple rack-mounted systems from being extended simultaneously. Throughout the guide, numerous safety warnings and cautions are highlighted to prevent personal injury and equipment damage.
